Jim Calhoun knows a thing or two about building something out of nothing, and it turns out that Steve Pikiell, now the Rutgers coach, was paying close attention all those years ago.

Over 26 seasons as Connecticut’s head coach, Calhoun turned a lousy, unknown program into a national brand, winning three national titles and 17 Big East championships — 10 regular-season and seven tournament titles — before retiring in September 2012.

In conference games, his Huskies typically dominated the perpetually struggling Scarlet Knights, but the trips to Piscataway, N.J., led Calhoun to believe Rutgers could build a powerhouse if it wanted.

When it comes to football, Saquon Barkley has a knack for doing what might sound impossible.

Whether it’s his freakish feats in the weight room, or his game-breaking plays during a three-year career at Penn State (during which he scored a school-record 53 touchdowns), the 6-foot, 233-pounder earned another distinction when he was selected second overall by the Giants in the draft last month instead of a quarterback.

In a QB-driven league where an every-down back is an endangered species, Barkley was the highest running back drafted in more than a decade.

Two days after the biggest win in her tenure as Columbia women's basketball coach, and two and half hours into another one of her intense practices, Megan Griffith '07CC had seen enough.

She gave the whistle around her neck an emphatic blow to stop the drill.

"We still gotta play like underdogs!" Griffith exclaimed. "We haven't accomplished anything yet!"

The sixth-year head coach didn't even have to reference the lackadaisical movements through the offensive set against the scout team defense that caused her irritation. Her team knows going through the motions is below expectations.

The Stanwicks are considered one of the first families of lacrosse. All eight of Wells Sr. and Dori Stanwick’s children, including Shack, the Johns Hopkins freshman attackman who was the No. 1 recruit in the country, have played or are playing in Division I. Yet throughout their careers, the Stanwicks have been in the minority, woven together by a common thread: a leather-strung stick.

When the Big Ten announced it would start playing its men’s basketball tournament on the East Coast, the venue that made headlines was clear: Madison Square Garden.

From the start of the NIT in the late 1930s, to Knicks championships in the ’70s and the birth of the Big East Tournament in the ’80s, the Garden has as much history as it does nicknames.

Dante Miller is NFL fast. Like, Chris Johnson NFL fast.

Millers' been clocked in at 4.25 for the 40-yard dash more times than he can count on one hand since he's been at Columbia. A smidge slower than Chris Johnson's 4.24 40-yard dash in the 2008 Combine, which is the second-fastest time in NFL history.
